Staying Cool in the Magic: How to Beat the Heat in Orlando’s Theme Parks This Summer
There’s nothing quite like a summertime visit to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando—the long hours, the extra entertainment, the late-night fireworks, and that unmistakable Florida sunshine. But if you’ve ever visited Orlando from June through September, you know the heat is no joke. Warm temperatures and high humidity can turn even the most magical day into a sweaty challenge.
At Wish and Wander Journeys, we help families plan summer theme park vacations every year—and we know all the insider tips to keep you cool, comfortable, and smiling from rope drop to fireworks.
Here’s how to beat the Orlando heat like a pro:
1. Start Early, Break Midday, Return at Night
The golden rule of summer theme park touring: Play early, rest midday, return when it cools off.
Morning and late evening tend to be much more comfortable—and significantly less crowded. Midday is perfect for a pool break, lunch at your resort, or a refreshing nap. Staying at an on-property hotel to makes it easy for your afternoon break!
W&WJ Tip: Maximize the Park Hopper ticket option. After you take an afternoon break, switch parks for an entirely new evening experience!
2. Hydrate… then Hydrate Again
Florida heat sneaks up on you quickly. Staying hydrated is essential, especially with all the walking.
Smart hydration ideas:
Bring a refillable water bottle
Ask for free ice water at any quick-service restaurant
Add electrolytes to your bottle once or twice per day
If you do feel overwhelmed by the heat, do not hesitate to visit a First Aid station in the parks. They are well equipped to help!
3. Take Advantage of Air Conditioning (Your New Best Friend)
Orlando theme parks are filled with air-conditioned attractions—use them wisely!
Some of our favorite spots to cool off:
Magic Kingdom: Hall of Presidents, Pirates of the Caribbean, Philharmagic, Enchanted Tiki Room
EPCOT: Spaceship Earth, The Land Pavilion, The Seas Pavilion
Hollywood Studios: Minnie and Mickey’s Runaway Railway, Star Tours, Frozen Sing-Along
Animal Kingdom: Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, Festival of the Lion King
Universal Orlando: The Bourne Stuntacular, Harry Potter attractions, Despicable Me
W&WJ Tip: Level up your cooldown breaks by combining an air conditioned show with a snack. One of our favorites is getting a Dole Whip to bring into the Enchanted Tiki Room. It’s entertaining and refreshing—a win for everyone.
4. Bring (or Buy) Cooling Gear
A small investment in cooling gear can make a world of difference. A little preparation before you travel can make everyone more comfortable!
Our top picks include:
Cooling towels
Portable neck fans
Mini handheld fans for little ones
Breathable, moisture-wicking clothing
5. Snack Smart and Choose Refreshing Treats
Summer in Orlando gives you the perfect excuse to indulge in cold, refreshing snacks.
Guest favorites include:
Dole Whip
Frozen Butterbeer
Ice cream cookie sandwiches
Fruit cups
W&WJ Tip: Plan a table-service meal right in the middle of the day. It gives your family a guaranteed, air-conditioned break to cool off, rest your feet, and reset your energy before heading back out into the heat. It’s one of the best ways to stay comfortable during long summer park days!
6. Dress for the Weather
Florida summers = heat + humidity + afternoon showers.
Smart outfit choices to accommodate the unique Florida weather:
Light, breathable fabrics
Quick-dry shorts
Sun hats or visors
Sandals or shoes that can get wet
Sunscreen (and reapply frequently!)
W&WJ Tip: Pack an extra pair of socks in your park bag. After a downpour or water ride, changing socks feels AMAZING and prevents blisters.
7. Find Shade—Your Future Self Will Thank You
Seek shade whenever possible. Even a few minutes out of direct sunlight can make a big difference.
Look for:
Shady queues
Covered walkways
Shops (nearly every land has at least one!)
Covered dining areas
You can also bring your own shade! Bringing an SPF umbrella gives you an option for shade, no matter where you are in the parks!
8. Embrace the Afternoon Rain Showers
Good news: summer showers are normal and often help cool the parks down. Work with the weather instead of against it!
What to bring:
Lightweight ponchos - Bring inexpensive, disposable ponchos. They’re lightweight, easy to pack, and you can toss them after the rain passes—no soggy poncho stuffed in your backpack for the rest of the day!
Quick-dry shoes - no one likes to have soggy feet!
Water-friendly bags - these also help when you are on rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure
W&WJ Tip: When the rain clears, many guests leave the parks—which means cooler temperatures and shorter lines for those who stick around.
9. Use Mobile Ordering to Avoid Standing in the Sun
Mobile ordering your quick service meals and snacks can save you from waiting in hot outdoor lines. Order ahead, pick it up when ready, and find a shady or air-conditioned spot to enjoy your meal. Ordering lunch early (even in the morning!) to secure your preferred pickup window can help you avoid peak crowds and hangry meltdowns.
10. Know Your Family’s Limits
Heat affects everyone differently. It’s okay—encouraged, even—to slow down and take breaks as needed. A magical day is a comfortable day. When designing custom itineraries, we always build in rest time, shade breaks, and cooling strategies—especially for families with young children or older adults.
